Turning Broken Pieces Into Gold: The Beauty of Embracing Your Scars
View this post on Instagram
What if the cracks, the scars, the messy, broken bits weren’t something to hide—but something to honor? Imagine if every struggle, every setback, became part of your masterpiece, glowing with gold instead of shame.
Let me tell you about an art form that changed how I see my own broken pieces…
A few years back, I learned about a Japanese art form that repairs broken pottery with lacquer mixed with powdered gold. Instead of hiding the cracks, it highlights them—turning the damage into something even more beautiful.
This morning, on an endurance run, I started thinking about that art… and about life. My life. The lives of people I love. The struggles. The moments that shattered us.
Then I asked myself: If my life were a piece of pottery, what would it look like?
Would I embrace my broken bits, let them be part of me? Or would I hide them, ashamed of the struggles and imperfections?
Because this art—this kintsugi—doesn’t disguise the cracks. It doesn’t erase them. It honors them. It takes what’s broken and makes it part of the story, part of the beauty.
So, I’m learning to do the same. To stop running. To stop hiding. To let my broken bits be seen. Because without them, I wouldn’t be who I am today. Broken bits and all.
So if you’re in a rough season, know this: this moment will pass—but don’t hide from it. Don’t be embarrassed by your cracks. Because one day, you’ll look back and see how every break, every scar, became part of your gold.
Send this to a friend who needs this reminder.
Let them know you see them—all of them—and that you're here.
Grit + Gumption.
